Best Time to Visit Summit County

A true four-season destination. Here's what each season offers — and how to pick the right time for your trip.

Summit County is a year-round playground — legendary ski terrain in winter, wildflowers and festivals in summer, and golden aspens in fall. The “best” time depends on what you’re after: powder days, festival weekends, quiet-season value, or fall color. Here’s the season-by-season breakdown.

❄️

Winter

Late Nov – Mid Apr
Peak ski season

Reliable Colorado snow across Keystone, Breckenridge, Copper, and Arapahoe Basin. Holidays and weekends are busiest (and priciest); January and early April often bring great snow with smaller crowds.

Spring

Apr – May
Spring skiing & deals

Bluebird days, slushy “corn” snow, and lively closing-weekend parties — Arapahoe Basin often spins into June. Late April–May is mud season in town: the quietest, most affordable time to visit.

Timing your trip — FAQ

For the best combination of snow and value, locals love January (deep snow, post-holiday lull) and late March–early April (long sunny days, spring conditions, fewer crowds). The Christmas/New Year and President’s Day weeks have the most reliable terrain open but the biggest crowds and prices. See our winter activities guide.

“Mud season” — roughly late April through May, and again in October/early November — is the quietest and most affordable time, between the ski and summer seasons. Summer mid-week and early December (before the holidays) are also good value.

Plenty — hiking, mountain biking, paddleboarding and boating on Dillon Reservoir, fishing, scenic gondola rides, and a constant stream of free concerts and festivals. Browse our summer activities and events calendar.

Fall color in Summit County typically peaks in mid-to-late September, depending on elevation and weather. Boreas Pass and the Frisco/Breckenridge area put on a brilliant gold show.
