As you may know the H Lift replacement and terrain expansion is exciting news, some of you may also have heard/read reports on a deal between USSA (US Ski Team) and Copper Mountain Resort regarding an early season “alpine ski training venue” to be built at Copper. The attached press release was recently released by USSA and Copper Mountain announcing a long-term partnership to create the US Ski Team Speed Center at Copper. This venue will be an exclusive on-snow alpine ski racing venue designed to provide full-length downhill training early each fall.

This is a very exciting project for Copper. This project involves a considerable capital investment in our snowmaking infrastructure and would not be possible without the USSA commitment and the strong support of the Powdr Corp. team. This investment will ensure that the Copper Mountain operations team has the resources necessary to meet the needs of the national team without sacrificing our normal early season snowmaking production for our skiing guests. In fact, overall snowmaking production potential will increase after the training venue opens (November 1).

Not only will this new venue allow Copper Mountain to work directly with the best Ski Team in the world, this partnership between Copper and USSA sets the stage for Copper, and Woodward at Copper, to become the epicenter for all levels of training and development for the US Ski Team, US Freeskiing and US Snowboarding. Copper will become an “Official Training site of the US Ski Team”. This long term relationship will further enhance Copper’s role in early season race training.

The venue for the speed training center will be in the Super Bee pod and take advantage of the fantastic terrain in that area including “Rosi’s Run, Andy’s Encore and Oh No” and is intended to operate from November 1 – December 10 each ski season. Construction will begin in August 2011 with the goal of having the entire infrastructure in place early this winter. Copper Station will serve as the home base for the athletes and team personnel each season all of whom will also be lodging at Copper. In addition to the US Team, we expect that in time many international teams will also be training and lodging at Copper to take advantage of this unique speed training venue.
